BSc (Hons) with Foundation Year

In your foundation year, you will undertake modules that are provided across the Faculty of Science and Engineering for the pre-certificate stage, gaining a solid grounding in readiness for further study on the BSc itself. 

After successful completion of your Foundation Year, you will continue onto the full BSc degree programme.

About the course

Taught by first-class, research-active staff in state-of-the-art facilities that include the world-class £1.5m Health and Human Performance Laboratory, this course develops a solid understanding of the core principles governing exercise science across a range of clinical groups. An emphasis on practical learning sets it apart from the purely classroom-based courses offered at many other institutions. You'll apply theory to real world scenarios and in doing so, you'll be prepared for a seamless move into employment upon graduation.

There are three course options available for studying Applied Exercise Science for Health at Hull. The foundation year option is ideal if your qualifications do not allow direct entry on to the three-year BSc. There is also a four-year study option, allowing you to specialise in your preferred area in Year 4 on the MSci course.

The importance of utilising exercise primarily for its health benefits has increased rapidly in recent years, leading to a growth in job opportunities for highly skilled and practically adept graduates in the field. Entry requirements

Foundation Year entry requirements:

  • The foundation year is designed for applicants whose qualifications and experience do not allow direct entry to the undergraduate degree.
  • We expect applicants to demonstrate an experience of a related subject and an aptitude for academic work which may be determined by an essay and/or interview alongside the application.
  • For applicants with A levels in subjects other than those key to the degree, we will usually require a minimum of 80 points from Level 3 qualifications.

International students

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

Future prospects

When you graduate with a degree in Applied Exercise Science for Health you will possess the confidence to translate evidence based skills in exercise science and health into day-to-day practise, communicate solutions to health problems and motivate behavioural change.

Skills gained will enable you to pursue a career as a professional health care provider with a specific understanding in exercise science and health behaviour. For example, you will have the academic and practical skills needed to set up your own private clinic, work in occupational health settings, practice in the leisure industries, operate in the armed forces or secure a career within the NHS. You may also consider staying on for additional study to work towards either a Masters by research or PhD.

The transferable skills you learn on this course, from communication and leadership to organisation and time management, are highly sought-after by employers in the public and private sectors. You will therefore also be equipped for a successful career in areas including the Civil Service, the Police, broadcasting and banking.

A number of graduates from other sports-related programmes have been selected by elite professional football clubs in the past, while others have chosen to teach physical education in primary and secondary schools.
